The South Carolina Aquarium has significantly enhanced its educational programming for students across the state with the launch of the new Boeing Learning Lab at the Maritime Center in Charleston. This state-of-the-art facility, located on the waterfront of Charleston Harbor and within walking distance from the aquarium, aims to provide students with innovative learning opportunities that promote environmental stewardship.
The construction of the Boeing Learning Lab took nearly two years to complete, culminating in a facility that spans 8,500 square feet. It includes:
This learning hub is designed to facilitate a variety of educational programs that will cater to students of different ages and learning stages. Upcoming programs include the Dominion Energy School Programs, virtual learning options, a high school intern program, and a Teen Conservation Crew, along with many others.
Kevin Mills, president and CEO of the aquarium, highlighted that the lab will provide students with unprecedented access to educational resources and instructors, allowing them to engage more deeply with topics related to natural resources and conservation. The lab is being considered a “beacon of hope” for future generations, reflecting a commitment to fostering a love for and responsibility towards the environment.
The project saw collaboration between local contractors and architects, specifically with Trident Construction as the contractor and John Ciccarelli Architect overseeing the design. This local involvement emphasizes a community-oriented approach to enhancing educational infrastructure in South Carolina.
The Boeing Learning Lab is set to start hosting educational programs later in the spring of 2025. As the opening approaches, the aquarium is preparing to leverage this new facility to expand its outreach and impact within the educational community.
