Laurinburg, NC – Beloved Resident Barbara Brooks Mudd Passes Away at 80

Barbara Brooks Mudd, a cherished member of the Laurinburg community, passed away on July 11, 2025, at the age of 80 after a brief but valiant battle with cancer. Her contributions to education, community service, and faith have left a lasting impact on those who knew her.

Born on March 26, 1945, in Portsmouth, Virginia, Barbara was the daughter of Clayton White Brooks and Emma Gertrude Briggs Brooks. She dedicated over 25 years of her life to serving as a Teachers Assistant at Hoffman Elementary School and later with REACH, where she built meaningful relationships with countless students, many of whom remember and cherish her fondly.

In addition to her educational career, Barbara was an active member of the Hoffman Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, showcasing her commitment to helping others in her community. She also volunteered with Scotland Regional Hospice, providing care and support to families facing difficult times. Barbara’s strong sense of community was evident in her faith as well; she was a long-standing member of the First Baptist Church of Laurinburg, where she served as a Deacon and participated in the church choir, sharing her love for music.

Family Life and Legacy

Barbara was proud of her family, lovingly referred to as “Ginga” by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her son, Rickie Bostick, and his wife, Hope Bostick of Hamlet. Her grandchildren include Landon Brooks Bostick, Sydney Elizabeth Bostick, and fiancé Christian Zapata. Barbara’s great-grandchildren are Asher James Zapata, Vivian Rose Zapata, and a new arrival expected in August named Julian Ayala Zapata.

Preceded in death by her husband, Roger Dale Mudd, Barbara is also survived by her brothers Wade Brooks (Elaine) and Clayton Brooks Jr. (Suma), and her sister Betty Brooks Holt (Bob), along with numerous nieces and nephews including Wally Holt, Jeff Holt, Meg Brooks Coleman, Thomas Brooks, and Clay Brooks. Her former husband, Richard Bostick of Hoffman, NC, remains a cherished friend.

Memorial Services

In honor of Barbara Brooks Mudd’s life and legacy, the family is holding visitation on July 15, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Richard Boles Funeral Service. A memorial service will follow on July 16, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Laurinburg, officiated by Dr. Wayne Wike. Subsequently, a private interment will occur at a later date at Richmond County Memorial Park.

Donations in Memory

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Barbara’s memory to Scotland Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353. Her dedication to her community, her family, and her faith will always be remembered. Barbara’s spirit and endeavors have created a legacy which will continue to inspire those she has touched throughout her life.
