In a heart-wrenching and shocking turn of events, over 20 children have been removed from a home in Arcadia, California, following serious accusations of child abuse and an ongoing investigation into potential irregularities in a surrogacy business. The couple at the center of this investigation, Silvia Zhang and Guojun Xuan, are facing grave charges that have left the community in disbelief.
This all began back in May, when a hospital alerted authorities about a troubling case involving a two-month-old infant who was admitted with a traumatic head injury. Upon examination, doctors discovered intracranial bleeding, raising immediate concerns about the child’s well-being. Disturbingly, it was revealed that the child wasn’t taken to the hospital until two days after the injury had occurred. This prompted further investigation into the living conditions of the children at Zhang and Xuan’s home.
As part of the investigation, authorities uncovered surveillance footage showing a nanny, Chunmei Li, engaging in alarming behavior by allegedly violently shaking and striking the baby. Such discoveries led to Zhang and Xuan’s arrest on suspicion of felony child endangerment and neglect.
The total number of children removed from the couple’s home is 21, ages ranging from a tender 2 months to 13 years. Most of these children are between the ages of one and three, and they have been placed into the custody of a child-welfare agency for their safety. Authorities had to intervene further as out of the children removed, 15 were taken directly from the couple’s residence while an additional six were located at different locations.
The situation grows even more complex with revelations that Zhang and Xuan were running a surrogacy business named Mark Surrogacy Investment LLC—a venture that has since had its business license terminated. Several women have stepped forward, claiming they served as surrogate mothers for the couple, raising suspicions about whether the couple misled them. Authorities are actively looking into potential violations of surrogacy laws, as there seems to be a lack of understanding regarding these regulations on the couple’s part.
Neighbors have also come forward with disconcerting accounts of what they witnessed while living near Zhang and Xuan. Reports of odd discipline practices and children clustering together on the porch have further fueled concerns about the children’s upbringings.
The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services is taking their time in handling the case and has opted not to provide specific comments at this stage. Meanwhile, the FBI is now involved, underscoring the seriousness of this investigation.
