Sponsor Our ArticlesOn April 28, a tragic event occurred when a vehicle crashed into a building hosting the YNOT after-school camp. The incident resulted in the loss of four young lives and injuries to six others. The community is mourning the loss and seeking support for the affected families. Investigations are ongoing, with police confirming that the driver was not impaired. The Chatham community is uniting to honor the victims and provide assistance during this difficult time.
A tragic incident unfolded on April 28 when a car veered off course and crashed into a building hosting an after-school camp operated by Youth Needing Other Things Outdoors (YNOT). This unfortunate event occurred just around 3:20 p.m., when the building was bustling with children participating in various activities.
The vehicle, driven by a 44-year-old woman, Marianne Akers, unexpectedly left the roadway, crossed a field, and crashed into the east side of the YNOT building. In this heartbreaking incident, several children were outside enjoying their time when the vehicle struck them before entering the building. Sadly, this collision has had a devastating impact on the Chatham community.
In the aftermath of the crash, four young lives were tragically lost. Among the deceased is Rylee Britton, an 18-year-old from Springfield, along with three young girls – Ainsley Johnson, 8; Kathryn Corley, 7; and Alma Buhnerkempe, 7, all from Chatham. The loss of these vibrant young people has cast a shadow over the community, leaving friends and family heartbroken.
Alongside the fatalities, the crash caused injuries to six other children. One of these injured children remains in critical condition, requiring ongoing medical attention. The local community is coming together, hoping for a swift recovery for those hurt in this tragic event.
Illinois State Police have confirmed that Akers was not impaired by drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident. Preliminary toxicology results returned negative, suggesting that other factors may have played a role. There are indications that Akers may have experienced a medical emergency before losing control of her vehicle, although this has yet to be confirmed.
Security camera footage provides startling insights into the event, showing the car traveling a significant distance away from the road. The vehicle didn’t take any corrective action, making its way across a field, a road, a sidewalk, and a parking lot before crashing into the building. After the collision, the car continued through the structure, exiting out of the opposite side before finally coming to a halt after striking a pole and a fence. This chaotic sequence of events raises many questions and calls for a thorough examination of what happened.
The Chatham community, with a population of roughly 15,000 residents, is reeling from the impact of this tragedy. As the days pass, local residents are remembering the bright futures lost and supporting one another through this challenging time. Initiatives to support the affected families are being organized, and funeral services are being planned for the young victims, ensuring they are honored appropriately.
In a show of sympathy for those affected, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff. This formal tribute signifies the heartfelt sorrow shared by many, as communities often come together in times of need. It is a small gesture in light of the immense grief felt by so many.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to uncover more details surrounding the incident. It’s a difficult time for the families involved, and there’s a collective hope that the findings will provide clarity regarding the circumstances leading up to this tragic event. This crash serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life, especially in the context of lively after-school activities meant to enrich children’s lives.
As the community grapples with the aftermath, many are focusing on healing and supporting those who’ve been irrevocably affected by this heartbreaking incident.
