Bowling Green, Kentucky—AESC (Automotive Energy Supply Corp.), a Japan-based company focused on electric vehicle batteries, has confirmed that construction continues on its $2 billion battery plant in Bowling Green. This declaration comes in response to a report from a major publication that claimed construction had been halted. AESC aims to create around 2,000 jobs and anticipates significant economic impacts for the region.
AESC spokesman Brad Grantham clarified that work is ongoing and infrastructure improvements are actively being made on the site of the Bowling Green facility. The plant, which broke ground in August 2022 during a ceremony attended by local government officials and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, is planned to cover approximately 3 million square feet. It is projected to power up to 300,000 electric vehicles annually by 2027.
In contrast to the reports of construction stalling, Bowling Green Mayor Todd Alcott’s comments were misinterpreted. The Wall Street Journal article that suggested a halt in progress caused confusion about the plant’s current status. AESC is also overseeing a similar facility currently being built in Florence, South Carolina, where construction has been paused, and is expected to employ 1,600 workers at its completion.
The Bowling Green facility is scheduled to start some functions in 2025, full operational capacity is expected by 2027, aligning with the anticipated growth in demand for electric vehicles. AESC is shifting its production focus to not only manufacture EV batteries but also include energy storage solutions to meet evolving market needs effectively.
AESC has a strong manufacturing history, previously supplying batteries to major automotive brands such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, and Nissan.
