Surrounded by his loved ones, Taylor’s passing marks the end of a rich and impactful life dedicated to service and family.
Earl Taylor was born in the rural foothills of Traveler’s Rest, South Carolina, to Attorney J.E. Taylor and Grace Darnell Taylor. He graduated from Slater-Marietta High School and went on to enlist in the U.S. Army at a young age, where he became a member of the Distinguished Honor Guard. After completing his military service, Taylor began his career at J.C. Penney department store before transitioning into law enforcement.
Over a span of more than two decades, Taylor was recognized for his distinguished service across federal agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), the FBI, CIA, and the United States Secret Service. Notably, he was involved in protective assignments where he guarded U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. Following his retirement in 1987, Taylor continued to make contributions to the field of security as part of Norred & Associates, Inc. in Atlanta.
In 2003, after 67 years of marriage to his beloved wife, Merilus Clary Taylor, he retired to Myrtle Beach. He was known among family and friends for his honor, precision, strength, and sharp wit. Earl Taylor is survived by his wife, Merilus Clary Taylor, their son Earl Powe Taylor II (Gayle) from Jensen Beach, FL, and daughters Johnalisa Leming (Greg) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Byron Kelli Margaret Taylor Earle (Mike) of Myrtle Beach, SC. He is also survived by two sisters, Ruth Hollingsworth (Billy) and Atha Hancox, in addition to numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six brothers, demonstrating a strong familial bond that persisted throughout his life.
In honor of his life and service, a memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, November 1, 2025, from 2 PM to 4 PM at Lewis Crematory Chapel in Myrtle Beach. A celebration of life will follow, allowing family and friends to share their memories of Earl. Additionally, he will be honored with military honors during the service. The arrangements for his cremation are being managed by Kelvin F. Lewis and the staff of Lewis Crematory & Funeral Home.
