AWS Unveils Upgraded Account Tracking for Enhanced Lifecycle Management

In today’s digital age, managing cloud infrastructure effectively is key for companies of all sizes. AWS Organizations has recently introduced an exciting upgrade that allows customers to centrally manage their AWS accounts with a much more refined system. This new feature focuses on granular account state tracking to boost lifecycle management, which could help organizations manage their accounts from the moment they’re created all the way to their closure.

Automated Efficiency at Your Fingertips

The upgrade makes it easier than ever for customers to automate the account creation process. Through the CreateAccount API, businesses can set up an account vending pipeline. This streamlined approach ensures that policies, roles, and resources across new accounts are deployed in a standardized manner. Let’s face it—it can be quite a hassle to spin up new accounts while trying to keep everything organized and secure. This enhancement is a real relief!

Understanding Account Lifecycle Management

The heart of this new feature revolves around lifecycle management. This process takes care of accounts from the initial provisioning stages to their ultimate closure. With this upgrade, organizations can quickly provision accounts specifically for their developer teams while maintaining tight security controls. This means faster operations without compromising safety—an essential balance in the cloud world.

The Status Quo: What’s Been Missing

account status field, which included statuses like ACTIVE, PENDING_CLOSURE, and SUSPENDED. However, this system lacked the granularity needed for effective management. For instance, accounts marked as ACTIVE may not have been fully ready for use, and the SUSPENDED status didn’t clarify whether closures were initiated by customers or resulted from issues like fraud or payment problems. This ambiguity posed challenges for organizations managing multiple accounts.

An Exciting New Solution is Here!

State field to offer more detailed account readiness information. New state values will now include: PENDING_ACTIVATION, ACTIVE, SUSPENDED, PENDING_CLOSURE, and CLOSED. This added specificity ensures organizations are fully aware of any account’s current state at a glance. Plus, you’ll find this new information easily accessible in the AWS Organizations console and through various API responses like DescribeAccount, ListAccounts, and ListAccountsForParent.

Enhancing Your Workflow

State information into your account vending pipelines. In fact, it’s suggested to phase out the older Status field in automated workflows to stay up to date with the best practices. Both fields will coexist in API responses until September 2026, when the Status field will be officially removed—so it’s best to make the transition sooner rather than later!
