Born on July 12, 1951, in Asheville, NC, Bruce was the son of Eldridge Edward “Ed” Caldwell and Pansy “Nell” Thompson Caldwell. He graduated from Enka High School in Candler, NC, in 1969. He later obtained an undergraduate degree in instrumental music and education from Western Carolina University and went on to earn a master’s degree from Furman University.
Bruce served as the Band Director at Wren High School in Piedmont, SC, where he made significant contributions to music education. He had the honor of playing with The Players, formerly of Chicago, and collaborated with musicians such as Keith Howland, Jeff Coffey, Rob Arthur, and Ed Toth. Locally, he performed with the band Back 9 and was actively involved with theater groups such as Mill Town Players and Center Stage.
His musical achievements were recognized through multiple nominations, including being nominated twice for “Instrumentalist of the Year” by the Carolina Beach Music Association. Beyond his musical talents, Bruce was known for his generous spirit and ability to connect with people in his community. He had a passion for sports cars and remained active in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA).
