After graduating from West Florence High School in Florence, South Carolina, in 1972, Calkins furthered his education, completing the Respiratory Therapy program at San Jacinto College in Pasadena, Texas, in 1990. During his career, he worked in various states including Texas, Florida, and Vermont, ultimately serving at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, Vermont, before his retirement in 2018.
