The project, funded by the city’s Façade Improvement Program, aims to blend modern improvements with the bar’s traditional charm, maintaining a familiar atmosphere for long-time patrons. Further renovations are planned for the vacant upper floors in the future, ensuring continued evolution of this beloved establishment.

Greenville, South Carolina – City Tavern in downtown Greenville reopened on July 1, 2025, following a three-month renovation that cost $250,000. The renovations were funded through Greenville’s Façade Improvement Program, aimed at revitalizing and modernizing the downtown area.

Located at 128 N. Main St., the tavern has undergone significant updates, including a contemporary glass façade that replaces its previous teal exterior, along with new signage. Inside, the first floor has received a makeover featuring a new bar area, a raised ceiling, and new flooring designed to enhance the tavern’s overall aesthetic.

Scott Woods, the owner of City Tavern for two decades, emphasized retaining a familiar and comfortable atmosphere for regular customers while modernizing key aspects of the establishment. Long-term employees have been retained during the renovations, with some staff members having worked at City Tavern for over 20 years, fostering continuity and loyalty among patrons.

The renovation project began in March 2025 and included substantial interior work as well as updates to the kitchen facilities. A new menu has been created under the guidance of Chef Chris Rosensteel, co-owner of Society Sandwich Bar and Social Club. In addition to keeping popular dishes such as the Cajun Philly, the expanded menu aims to enhance the dining experience at City Tavern.

Renovation efforts are being completed in phases. The current phase focuses on updates to the main operational areas, while a second phase is planned to explore options for the vacant upper floors. Although no finalized plans or renderings for the second and third floors have been publicly released, potential new restaurant concepts are expected to be introduced in the future.

The renovations and updates are part of a broader effort to adapt to changing consumer expectations in Greenville. As the local dining scene evolves, City Tavern aims to retain its dive bar charm while improving operational efficiency and aesthetics. The partnership between the tavern’s owners, the city, and local contractors highlights a community-driven initiative to enhance downtown Greenville, making it a vibrant destination for residents and visitors alike.

Overall, the reopening of City Tavern signifies a commitment to both maintaining traditions and embracing innovation, ensuring that it remains a beloved gathering place in the heart of downtown Greenville.
