Florence, SC – The community of Florence and its surrounding areas recently mourned the loss of several beloved figures, including Michael “Mike” John Mims, Jr., James E. “Red” Byrd, Florence M. Bailey, and Florence Ann Adams. Each of these individuals left a significant mark on their families and the community through unique contributions and personal legacies.

Michael “Mike” John Mims, Jr.

Mike Mims passed away on June 26, 2025, at the age of 55. Born on June 26, 1970, in Florence, he was the son of the late Sara Lyon and Mike Mims, Sr. Mims was the owner of B & M Builders and Maintenance, LLC, and was recognized as a skilled framer within the New River Valley area.

He is survived by his partner, Susan Sayers, their pets—including dogs, cows, goats, and chickens—as well as his stepfather Frank Lyon and siblings Chris, Aaron, and Christina Gardner. Mike’s legacy lives on through his family, which includes three nieces and nephews. A celebration of his life is planned for a later date.

James E. “Red” Byrd

James E. Byrd, known as “Red,” was born on March 28, 1933, in Darlington County. He was raised on a farm as the eleventh child in a family of twelve. After graduating from Rosenwald High in Society Hill, South Carolina, Byrd served in the US Army starting in 1953, where he earned the title of “Soldier of the Month” in his integrated battalion.

Following his military service, Byrd pursued a degree in Radio and Television Technology at Denmark Technical College, graduating in 1958. He moved on to establish Byrd’s TV in Florence in 1960, which has been a local staple for approximately 65 years.

Byrd was committed to his community, volunteering with the NAACP, the Florence District One School Board, and various other organizations. He was a dedicated member of Trinity Baptist Church, where he served as a Trustee and Deacon. Red Byrd is survived by his wife, Evelyn, four children, a special loved-one, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Florence M. Bailey

Florence M. Bailey passed away on June 21, 2025, just two months after reaching the milestone of her 101st birthday. Born on April 10, 1924, in Beverly, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Stewart and Sarah McIntosh. She married Bernard F. Bailey in 1942 and spent much of her life in Norway, Maine.

Bailey was remembered for her adventurous spirit, which included traveling to Europe and enjoying life in the Oxford Hills area. A passionate hobbyist, she delighted in reading cookbooks and fly fishing, and even embraced technology by using a Kindle tablet well into her 90s. Florence is survived by her three children, five granddaughters, six great-grandchildren, and a large extended family. A private graveside service will be held in South Paris, Maine, on July 12, 2025.

Florence Ann Adams

Florence Ann Adams, who was 84, passed away peacefully at home on June 22, 2025. Originally from Queens, New York, she was the daughter of the late Bishop and Helen Moll and was married to David C. Adams for 38 years. Florence Adams is survived by her son, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter, as well as her brothers and lifelong friends.

Throughout her life, Adams dedicated herself to service and was involved in a variety of volunteer activities. She was known for her warmth and creativity, and she enjoyed crafting and social outings. Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, ALS Association, or Shriner’s Hospitals.
