Florence, South Carolina – William Calvin Mouchette, a respected member of the community and a U.S. Navy veteran, passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on June 27, 2025. A funeral service to honor his life will take place on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, with burial following at Florence National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m., where he will receive military honors. The family will be available to speak with attendees from 11:30 a.m. prior to the service.

Born on July 3, 1926, in Aliceville, Alabama, Mouchette’s life was marked by service, faith, and a deep commitment to family. He served in World War II as a sailor aboard the USS Idaho and was present in Tokyo Bay for Japan’s formal surrender, symbolizing a significant moment in history. After returning from military service, Mouchette pursued a career in education, teaching for a year in Camden, Alabama before transitioning to bookkeeping for the Cattlemen Association.

In 1960, Mouchette and his family moved to Linden, Alabama, where he spent over three decades employed at Marathon Paper Mill before retiring in 1991. Throughout his professional life, he maintained a strong commitment to his faith and community. At Linden Presbyterian Church, he served as both a deacon and an elder. Mouchette relocated to South Carolina in 1996, where he became an active member of Faith Presbyterian Church, continuing his legacy of service and devotion.

Family Legacy

Mouchette is survived by his devoted wife, Nell Jones, whom he married on August 19, 1951, after meeting at Livingston State Teachers College in the fall of 1948. Together, they nurtured a loving partnership of 73 years, emphasizing faith and commitment throughout their union. His family includes children Ann Mouchette Adams (Steve) and Tom Mouchette (Jenny), along with son-in-law John Mullins.

He leaves behind a large family, including eight grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren, showcasing the deep roots and familial connections he cultivated over his lifetime. Mouchette was preceded in death by his son William Calvin Mouchette Jr. and daughter Gaynelle Mouchette Mullins, who will be remembered in the hearts of the family.

Community Impact

Known for his warmth, kindness, and dedication to both family and community, Mouchette positively influenced many lives during his lifetime. His involvement in local churches and community initiatives made him a beloved figure. His family expresses heartfelt gratitude for the compassionate care provided by McLeod Hospice during his final days.

At the funeral service, his grandsons and grandsons-in-law will serve as pallbearers, further honoring his legacy through their involvement. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Palmer Home for Children in Lake Cormorant, MS, or to a charity of the donor’s choice. This gesture reflects Mouchette’s lifelong dedication to helping others and nurturing the community that he cherished.

William Calvin Mouchette’s legacy will continue through the many lives he touched. His contributions to education, faith, and family underscore the values he held dear, ensuring that his memory will live on in the hearts and actions of those who knew him.
