The celebration reflects Michelin’s longstanding commitment to innovation and growth in the manufacturing sector.

South Carolina has witnessed Michelin North America, Inc. reach a significant milestone, celebrating 50 years of operations in the state and the 35th anniversary of its North American headquarters in Greenville. The festivities were held at the corporate headquarters on Tuesday, bringing together state leaders, including South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, to honor the occasion.

During the celebration, Michelin North America CEO Alexis Garcin announced a pivotal transition in leadership, introducing Matthew Cabe as his successor. Garcin is slated to take on a new role within Michelin effective October 1, 2024. This leadership change comes as the company marks its longstanding commitment to the region and its growing influence in the manufacturing industry.

According to a comprehensive report from the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business, Michelin has significantly impacted South Carolina’s economy, generating over $266 billion in total economic contribution since its establishment. Additionally, the company contributes around $8.2 billion annually to the state’s economy, underscoring its importance as a major employer and economic driver.

The company employs an impressive 24,915 people throughout South Carolina, with a notable presence in the Upstate region, where Michelin supports approximately 2.6% of total employment. In Greenville County alone, Michelin accounts for about 3.4% of all jobs. Greenville Mayor Knox White acknowledged the profound effect Michelin’s operations have had on the local economy, particularly in elevating the manufacturing sector.

Michelin’s journey in South Carolina began in 1975 when it opened its tire facility in Greenville, becoming the first plant in the state dedicated to tire manufacturing. By 1984, this facility had produced around 40 million tires, marking a significant achievement in the region’s industrial history. Today, Michelin operates 15 facilities across South Carolina, reflecting its growth over half a century and its adaptation to the evolving landscape of manufacturing.

The presence of Michelin has played a crucial role in transforming the region’s economy, transitioning it from a heavy reliance on textile manufacturing to a focus on advanced manufacturing practices. This shift has not only created thousands of jobs but also has fostered a workforce where many employees share familial ties to the company, continuing the tradition of working for Michelin that spans generations.

Overall, Michelin’s 50-year celebration in South Carolina serves as a reminder of its enduring impact on the economy and the community. As it prepares for a new leadership era with Matthew Cabe at the helm, the company’s commitment to innovation and growth within the region will likely continue to play a vital role in shaping the future of South Carolina’s manufacturing landscape.
