News Summary

Novant Health has announced plans to construct its first hospital in the Upstate region of South Carolina for $132 million. The proposed facility will feature 20 beds and a 100,000-square-foot medical office building, strategically located near Interstate 385. Following the submission of its Certificate of Need application, the decision on approval is expected by mid-2025, with the hospital potentially opening as early as 2027. The project aims to address the urgent need for healthcare services in an area facing a shortfall of hospital beds.

South Carolina – Novant Health is planning to construct its first hospital in the Upstate region of South Carolina, a project expected to cost $132 million. The proposed 20-bed facility will be situated on a 12-acre site off Patewood Drive, conveniently located near Interstate 385. In addition to the hospital, a 100,000-square-foot medical office building is included in the expansion plan.

In February 2025, Novant submitted its Certificate of Need application to the South Carolina Department of Public Health. The decision on this application is anticipated by the summer of 2025. If approval is granted, the hospital could potentially open its doors as early as 2027.

Ryan Lee has been appointed as the president of Novant Health’s Greenville region, and he has expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to enhance healthcare access within the community. The chosen site for the new hospital is directly across from Prisma Health and Bon Secours, the two largest healthcare providers in the Greenville area.

In terms of property acquisition, Novant Health purchased the land for $17 million in 2024. As a significant player in the healthcare sector, Novant Health ranks as the second-largest hospital operator in North Carolina, following Advocate Health. Earlier in 2024, the organization made headlines by acquiring three hospitals along the coast of South Carolina for a substantial $2.4 billion.

The financial backing for Novant Health appears stable, with a reported net income of $920 million on operating revenues that nearly reached $10.2 billion for the fiscal year 2024. This income stream included around $556 million from operating income and $363.5 million from investment income and other nonoperating sources. Today, Novant Health operates 19 hospitals and manages over 900 locations, employing approximately 40,000 people.

Greenville County is currently grappling with a shortage of 111 hospital beds, as highlighted in the 2024 South Carolina Health Plan. This indicates a growing demand for healthcare services in the community. The Upstate region has been marked as one of the fastest-growing areas in the state, further intensifying the requirement for additional healthcare facilities.

Prisma Health, owned by the Greenville Hospital Authority, reported revenues of $6.4 billion for its fiscal year 2024, underscoring the competitive healthcare landscape in the region. Meanwhile, Bon Secours Mercy Health, one of the largest Catholic-affiliated healthcare systems in the United States, boasts an annual revenue nearing $12 billion.

The new hospital aims to address the escalating demands for both outpatient services and specialty care in Greenville and its surrounding communities. This initiative is part of an effort to bolster healthcare accessibility and improve outcomes for residents in the Upstate region of South Carolina.
