News Summary

The Pee Dee Regional Transportation Authority (PDRTA) in Florence is actively hiring new bus drivers to respond to the increasing public transit demand in the Pee Dee region. With approximately 400,000 passenger trips recorded last year, the authority is expanding its services to connect residents across six counties. New hires will receive assistance in obtaining commercial driver’s licenses and undergo a thorough training program to ensure safety and compliance. This initiative aims to enhance community mobility and provide rewarding career opportunities.

Florence Seeks Bus Drivers to Meet Growing Transit Needs

In busy Florence, there’s a buzz of activity as the Pee Dee Regional Transportation Authority (PDRTA) puts out the call for new bus drivers. With public transit needs rising across the Pee Dee region, the authority is stepping up its game and expanding its team to provide increased services to the community. This is not just any job opportunity; it’s a chance to join a cause that supports and connects residents throughout six counties: Florence, Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Marlboro, and Marion.

A Growing Demand for Drivers

Why the urgency? In just last year, the PDRTA recorded approximately 400,000 passenger trips, a clear indication that more drivers are needed to keep pace with the growing demand. With transit options expanding from just five buses in the past to a much larger fleet today, the message is clear—the community loves its buses!

PDRTA’s Director of Safety has pointed out that the bus driver shortage isn’t just a local issue. It’s a challenge affecting public transportation all over the nation. The PDRTA is ready to join the fight against this driver drought, and they’re making it easier for new hires to get on board. New employees will receive assistance in obtaining their commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs), making this an appealing opportunity, especially for those looking to switch careers or just start one.

What Does Training Look Like?

So, how does one become a PDRTA bus driver? The training process is thorough and designed to ensure new drivers are well-prepared to hit the road. It all starts with an engaging online RTAP e-learning program, featuring essential topics such as ADA training, emergency procedures, and driver safety. After that, new drivers will dive into hands-on training, shadowing seasoned drivers to learn the ropes.

The training program is comprehensive, taking around two weeks in the classroom and an impressive 120 hours of practical on-the-road experience. Before they can hit the streets alone, aspiring drivers must prepare for and pass the CDL test—a crucial step that ensures safety and compliance.

A Chance to Connect with the Community

One good story comes from Kenneth Allen, who made the leap from driving for New Jersey Transit to the PDRTA. He relishes the community aspect of the job, and after successfully completing the required training, he’s found a place where he’s not only driving buses but making meaningful connections. It’s not just about getting passengers from point A to point B; it’s about being a part of their daily lives and journeys.

Sarah Pierce, another recent addition to the team who completed her training in May 2024, praised the effective teaching methods that made it easy for her to learn and feel confident on the road. Like Kenneth, she loves engaging with passengers and making their transit experience enjoyable.

Join the Movement!

The PDRTA is on a mission to keep essential public transit services going strong. By addressing the critical need for qualified bus drivers, they aim to create an efficient and reliable transportation option for everyone in the Pee Dee region. If you’re interested in becoming a bus driver, you can check out the recent job listings posted on the PDRTA website. This could be your chance to make a difference in your community while embarking on a rewarding new career journey.

The opportunity is here, and the community is counting on you! Whether you’re a seasoned driver or looking to embark on a new path, there’s a place for you to help keep Florence—and the entire Pee Dee region—moving forward!
