Florence Schools Adjust to Winter Storm Closures with Make-Up Days

Florence, S.C. – With the lingering chilly air from a recent winter storm still hanging around, Florence School District 3 has formally announced some important changes for students and parents alike, thanks to unexpected school closures. This update is essential for all families as we gear up for a big shift in scheduling!

New School Days on the Calendar

In light of the storm, which affected school operations, Florence School District 3 has set February 13, 14, and 17 as regular school days instead of the previously scheduled intercession days. Oh, and mark your calendars because February 12 will now be a full school day rather than the early dismissal that many had anticipated. This change is not just a random decision but is in compliance with state law, which requires school districts to make up for missed instructional days after utilizing their allotted e-learning days.

How Other Districts Are Coping

The winter weather hasn’t just impacted Florence; nearby districts are also feeling the effects. Horry County Schools have opted for an eLearning day on Friday, meaning students will tackle their lessons online. All afterschool activities have been rescheduled to avoid any conflicts with the inclement weather.

Things are expected to go back to in-person learning in Horry County on Monday, following their eLearning day. For those affected by power outages or lacking technology, worry not, as there will be chances to catch up on any assignments that might be missed.

Meanwhile, Georgetown County School District is taking a different approach, opting to close schools on Friday with no eLearning assignments and postponing all extracurricular activities. On the other hand, Darlington County School District plans to stick with a normal schedule on Friday, so that’s a relief for those families.

Delays and Closures Across the Region

Dillon School District Three will start its day with a two-hour delay on Friday, providing breakfast and lunch to students. Dillon School District Four is following suit with a similar delay, but will only serve lunch. Over in Marion County, schools and offices will be closed on Friday due to persistently hazardous road conditions.

Florence School District One is set to return to typical in-person learning on Friday, much to the relief of many students. However, Florence School District Two will be closed, while Florence School District Three, predicting rough road conditions, will remain closed as well. Florence School District Five is also taking precautions by staying closed this Friday.

Colleges and Universities Adjust Operations

It’s not just the K-12 schools affected by this winter weather madness. Scotland County Schools has called for an eLearning day on Friday after reassessing the conditions of the roads. The Public Schools of Robeson County will conduct a remote Teacher Work Day, and all after-school activities have unfortunately been canceled.

Colleges are also adapting; Coastal Carolina University will proceed with remote classes on Friday, adjusting campus facilities’ hours to accommodate the situation. Francis Marion University is getting back to business with classes starting at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, while Coker University is maintaining remote instruction and office hours until noon.

Horry-Georgetown Technical College will provide online instruction on Friday due to the lingering winter conditions. Florence-Darlington Technical College is also taking extra precautions by remaining closed through Thursday but plans to reopen on Friday.

Lastly, Robeson Community College will stick with remote classes and cancel all scheduled events for Friday as well.

What’s Next?

As families adjust to the new school schedule and make plans according to these announcements, it’s important to stay informed and prepared. Be sure to mark those calendars and stay warm out there, Florence! The weather may be chilly, but we’ll get through this together!
