FLORENCE, S.C. — Drivers heading east on Hoffmeyer Road in Florence will need another route next week, when the city shuts both eastbound lanes between West Evans Street and Five Points for the second phase of its sewer repair work.

The closure runs Monday, Nov. 9, through Friday, Nov. 13, and blocks all traffic in that direction. City officials said the shutdown also cuts off access to and from Hoffmeyer Road at the Florence Mall driveways, so shoppers will need to use other entrances.

The City of Florence is asking people to stay clear of the stretch until the repairs wrap up and to slow down and watch for crews if they must drive near the work zone.

The work is part of a $450,000 project the city launched in October to deal with recurring sewer trouble in the area, including blockages and foul odors. A blockage along the road had forced the city to run temporary bypass pumps.

Assistant City Manager Clint Moore has said the repairs are meant to fix current problems and prepare the line for growth on that side of town. Crews planned a few spot excavations followed by trenchless rehabilitation, either bursting in new polyethylene pipe or lining the old main with epoxy fiberglass.
