FLORENCE, S.C. — Florence-Darlington Technical College is adding a short-term path into health care work in Florence, a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant training program offered through the college workforce arm, the Corporate and Workforce Development Division.

Its first group of students is set to start in January 2027. The course runs 270 hours and carries no college credit. Students spend 210 hours in classes and hands-on lab work, then finish with a 60-hour supervised clinical externship. No college application is needed to sign up.

Clinical medical assistants work beside doctors and nurses, checking vital signs, getting patients ready for exams and helping with procedures. The college says graduates could land jobs in physician offices, urgent care centers and outpatient clinics, along with specialty practices such as cardiology and pediatrics.

Finishing the course prepares students to sit for a national certification exam, though the certifying agency sets its own eligibility rules. Medical assistants in South Carolina earn a median of $43,300 a year, based on JobsEQ figures the college cited.

Classes are handled through the workforce office at 1951 Pisgah Rd., and the office takes calls at 843-413-2715.
