FLORENCE, S.C. — The board that oversees public housing in Florence has suspended its executive director, Alphonso Bradley, after a special meeting held mostly behind closed doors.

Housing authority commissioners met Oct. 29 with one item on its agenda: legal advice on employment matters tied to the director. Commissioners spent most of the meeting in executive session while Bradley waited about 48 minutes, then came back out and voted in public to suspend him. Bradley did not object.

Neither the board nor Bradley would say why he was suspended or for how long, and the action was described only as a personnel matter. Nine days earlier, at the Oct. 20 meeting, Bradley had criticized some board practices and alleged a secret vote took place during a Sept. 25 session.

Bradley, who served on Florence County Council before taking the job, has run the agency since June 2023. His suspension comes one day after he joined city leaders at a North Florence groundbreaking for the Dr. Iola Jones community, a $20.5 million project in which 64 new units will take the place of the old Oakland Place complex.

That redevelopment, led by Paces Preservation Partners with the housing authority, is expected to be finished in January 2028.
