FLORENCE, S.C. — Florence police are holding a person of interest after a 29-year-old city man was stabbed to death in the predawn hours Saturday outside an apartment complex near West Marion Street.

The call came in at roughly 4:30 a.m., and Florence Police Department officers arriving at the scene found the wounded man lying in front of the complex at 307 Harrell St., and he was declared dead there.

Coroner Keith von Lutcken of Florence County identified the man as Anthony Ray of Florence. His body goes to the Medical University of South Carolina, where an autopsy is planned later this week.

Police have not said who is in custody, what led to the stabbing or whether a charge has been filed. No other injuries were reported.

Detectives and the coroner’s staff are continuing their work. Charges filed in Florence County are prosecuted by the solicitor’s office for the 12th Circuit.

The department said it would share more details as the investigation continues.
