TIMMONSVILLE, S.C. — Short-track racing in the Pee Dee is losing one of its main stages for at least a year. Florence Motor Speedway, the four-tenths-mile oval outside Timmonsville, will not publish a 2027 schedule, track management announced this week on social media.

The operators, who took over in 2020, said every season since then has been harder than the last and that after weighing every option they could find, carrying on no longer made sense. Owner Steve Zacharias is keeping the property and plans to pause operations rather than sell it.

Two weekends of racing remain on the calendar. First up is the South Carolina 250, Nov. 13-14. The season finale, the 34th annual South Carolina 400, takes the green flag the following weekend, Nov. 20-21.

The asphalt track opened in 1982 and sits about 15 miles from Darlington Raceway. It became the region’s Saturday night Late Model home after Myrtle Beach Speedway shut down in 2020, inheriting that track’s IceBreaker event and the South Carolina 400. With Florence dark next year, the speedway in Dillon will be the closest weekly short track for local drivers and fans.
