EFFINGHAM, S.C. — Florence County, S.C., deputies shot a 16-year-old boy during a domestic call on Fulton Avenue in Effingham on Monday, Oct. 5, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating, officials said.

Deputies responded to a domestic incident at a home and encountered a 16-year-old male armed with a knife. During the encounter, the teen charged at deputies with the knife and deputies shot him, according to SLED. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and remained there. No law enforcement officers were injured.

The Florence County Sheriff’s Office requested that SLED investigate. SLED said it will interview potential witnesses, collect evidence and forensically test evidence as needed, then summarize findings in a case file for prosecutors.

SLED said the Florence County incident is the 30th officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2026 and the third this year for the Florence County Sheriff’s Office. Statewide, there were 45 officer-involved shootings in 2025.

SLED said no other information will be released while the investigation continues.
