FLORENCE, S.C. — Florence-Darlington Technical College near Florence, S.C., has received nearly $2 million in federal funding to help eligible student-parents cover childcare while they finish school, the college announced.

The college was awarded $1,996,768 through the four-year Child Care Access Means Parents in School program. The program is designed to offset childcare costs and remove a major barrier for students raising children, college officials said.

Eligible students will be able to choose from participating independent childcare facilities off campus. Students must meet income requirements, and the share of costs a student pays will be set on a sliding-fee scale.

Vice President of Student Services Travis Gleaton said the grant gives parents greater access to higher education. CCAMPIS Director Melissa Cooper said affordable childcare can help student-parents attend classes, stay engaged and keep progressing toward degrees.

The college said it is also partnering with community agencies for additional resources for students and their children. Application materials are available through the college’s CCAMPIS page.
